What's Up for Breakfast 24?

We've invited back Dr. Sam Ladner, our first returning speaker! Sam was our Breakfast 15 guest in April 2010.

Mobile Work Life

The mobile platform is increasingly important to marketers and communication specialists. Sam will present some initial findings from her research project Mobile Work Life (http://mobileworklife.ca). This project involved research conducted in-home, in-office, and "ride along" field interviews with smartphone users.

Sam and her colleagues asked the question: "What is the impact of smartphone use on work/life balance?" Their initial findings suggest that smartphone users are indeed bringing their work home with them, but are also bringing their domestic responsibilities to work.

What does this mean for marketers? Sam will describe how domestic mobile use is starting to reflect workplace mobile use. She will also show how smartphone use is disrupting existing social interactions. Marketers and communication specialists will learn and have a chance to discuss consumer use patterns and how mobile is changing our social lives.

About Mobile Work Life

Mobile Work Life is a basic research project, funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSRHC) and hosted at Ryerson University, where Sam is a postdoctoral fellow.

About Sam

Dr. Sam Ladner, http://mobileworklife.ca/about/team/Dr. Sam Ladner is a sociologist specializing in the social aspects of technological change. She mixes private-sector consulting work with academic research and teaching. SMBOttawa

SMBOttawa has been organized and hosted by Simon Chen, Rob Lane and Ryan Anderson since 2008. SMBOttawa's breakfast networking events are inspired and have evolved from the Social Media Breakfast concept started by Bryan Person in Boston:

". . . as an almost-monthly event where social media experts and newbies alike come together to eat, meet, share, and learn. Marketers, PR pros, entrepreneurs, bloggers, podcasters, new media fanatics, and online social networkers are all welcome to attend."
